Win A Date With Tad Hamilton $7.99 The soundtrack to the happy-go-lucky teen romantic comedy Win a Date With Tad Hamilton has an appealingly lighthearted mix of dance, rock, and pop that includes Wheat’s “Some Days,” the Thorns’ cover of the Jayhawks’ alt-country classic “Blue,” and Liz Phair’s “Why Can’t I?” (surely one of the most-featured songs on romantic comedy soundtracks in 2003 and 2004). The overall feel of the collection is down-to-earth, with a strong emphasis on singer/songwriter tracks like Kyle Riabko’s “Waiting,” Jason Wade’s “Days Go By,” and John Mayer’s “Back to You.” Indeed, the soundtrack often sounds like it was aimed at an older audience than the film was (or, at least, it’s giving teenagers more credit than most soundtracks do) by including so many quiet, largely acoustic songs such as Alice Peacock’s “Leading With My Heart,” and Bonnie McKee’s “Somebody.” The songs that actually do sound like they belong on a typical teen movie soundtrack, like Wilshire’s “Something Special,” Soul Kid #1′s “More Bounce in California,” and Bleu’s “I Won’t Go to Hollywood” almost seem out of place compared to the more restrained feel of the other tracks. Blind Date – Widescreen $8.99 When speaking of Laurel and Hardy’s first feature film Pardon Us, Stan Laurel described it as “a three-story building on a one-story base”-in other words, a 2-reeler stretched and bloated into 6 reels. Much the same could be said of Blake Edwards’s Blind Date, though one wonders if Stan Laurel could have even gotten two reels out of its wafer-thin premise. At the outset, yuppie Bruce Willis is warned not to let his blind date, southern belle Kim Basinger, drink anything stronger than lemonade. So what does Willis do the first chance he gets? That’s right, kids; he plies poor Basinger with champagne. And then he wonders why his life rapidly goes to hell in a handbasket. In his first starring movie role, Bruce Willis manages to find all sorts of nuances in his one-note role, while Kim Basinger is very funny when she’s blotto-at least, for the first five minutes or so. John Laroquette costars as a character straight out of a 1920s bedroom farce; he’s also pretty good, even though his dialogue is numbingly unamusing. Date With A Dream (Japan) $39.99 Malene Mortensen emerged on the Danish jazz scene with her 2003 recording debut as a leader for Universal in Europe, following it up with this release for Stunt. With her fresh, engaging vocals and the potential to establish a following in both jazz and pop like Norah Jones, Mortenson isn’t really an improviser, but she works with top-notch musicians who create fresh arrangements of standards, while she also proves herself to be a capable composer. Of particular interest are her interpretations of standards, including the sensuous, slowly savored “I’ve Got a Date with a Dream” (where she’s backed by her trio plus strings and a lap steel player) and a heartfelt “At Last” (backed by pianist Kasper Villaume and soprano saxophonist Claus Waidtlow). She soars in Villaume’s imaginative post-bop arrangement of “Take Five,” displaying her soulful side. Mortenson’s originals are more pop-oriented, though still catchy and entertaining, especially her infectious “Off the Beat.” ~ Ken Dryden |
