Have Band Will Travel $14.99 The Stan Kenton Alumni Band, directed by trumpeter Mike Vax, are not what you would call a ghost band rehashing a steady diet of dusty charts from decades ago, but a living tribute to the late bandleader/composer, who died in 1977. The material on this CD is drawn from recordings made during their 2009 tour, mixing elements of old and new arrangements, all played with enthusiasm and finesse. Starting off with “The New Intermission Riff,” which alto saxophonist Kim Richmond based on Carl Fontana’s trombone solo in the original “Intermission Riff” and expanded for the full band, the band crackles with energy. Veteran arranger Lennie Niehaus scored the standard “Long Ago and Far Away” in swinging fashion. Gerry Mulligan’s “Swing House” isn’t one of his better-known works, though this snappy miniature is an obvious highlight. The newer arrangements also merit praise. Scott Whitfield and Ginger Berglund share the vocals in Steve Allen’s upbeat “This Could Be the Start of Something Big.” Steve Huffsteter penned the infectious “Joint Tenancy” (an intricate reworking of the changes to “Alone Together”) and shares the solo spotlight with fellow trumpeter Don Rader. “Crescent City Stomp” isn’t something one would envision in Kenton’s repertoire, but Eric Richard’s progressive blend of blues, New Orleans rhythm, and fiery solos will get anyone on his or her feet. Beautifully recorded and performed, the Stan Kenton Alumni Band continue to build on the tradition of the late bandleader. ~ Ken Dryden |

Long Live the Loud $13.99 Exciter: Chuck Beehler (vocals, drums); John Ricci (guitar); Allan Johnson (bass instrument).Following their fans’ tepid reception to Violence & Force, Exciter decided to secure the services of a `name’ producer for the recording of their third album, 1985′s Long Live the Loud. And with Motorhead producer Guy Bidmead at the controls, the Canadians certainly obtained their most professional sounding record thus far. But its title was a somewhat contradictory as well, for the band was actually at their most civilized here, abandoning much of the previous albums’ raw power in search of a more controlled power metal assault — similar to Manowar’s macho posturing (but without nearly as much chest-beating). Still, cuts like “Victims of Sacrifice”, “Beyond the Gates of Doom” and “Sudden Impact” show Exciter at their best, and the title track (with its wonderfully cheesy lyrics: “Long live the loud – we are loud and proud”) may just be their finest moment. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia |

But if the album seems pieced together from a few different sources, the band itself all seems to be coming from the same place, turning into a ferocious rock & roll band who, on their best day, could wrestle the title of greatest rock & roll band away from the Stones. Certainly, the sheer force of the nine-minute jam on Big Bill Broonzy’s “I Feel So Good” proves that, but what’s more remarkable is how the band are dovetailing as songwriters, complementing and collaborating with very different styles, to the extent that it’s hard to tell who wrote what; indeed, the ragged, heartbroken “Tell Everyone” sounds like a Stewart original, but it comes from the pen of Ronnie Lane. The key is that Stewart, Lane and Ron Wood (Ian McLagan only co-write “Bad ‘N’ Ruin”) are all coming from the same place, all celebrating a rock & roll that’s ordinary in subject but not in sound. Take “Bad ‘N’ Ruin,” the tale of a ne’er do well returning home with his tail between his legs, after the city didn’t treat him well. It has its counterpart in “Had Me a Real Good Time,” where a reveler insists that he has to leave, concluding that he was glad to come but also glad to get home. These are songs that celebrate home, from family to the neighborhood, and that big heart beats strong in the ballads, too, from the aching “Sweet Lady Mary” to the extraordinary reworking of Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed,” which soars in ways Macca’s exceptional original never did. Then, there’s there humor — the ramshackle “On the Beach,” the throwaway lines from Rod on “Had Me a Real Good Time” — which give this a warm, cheerful heart that helps make Long Player a record as big, messy, and wonderful as life itself. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine |
