Pigskin and plantations
Hey football fans here! Looking to get the full "experience in New Orleans," while in town for the NFL playoffs? With the beautiful architecture, historical monuments and restaurants, is located in the Barrio French, there are many other must-see destinations in southern Louisiana that are worth visiting.
Between New Orleans and Baton Rouge There are several houses before the war monuments are open to the public for tours. With lush gardens, Spanish moss-draped oaks, and white-columned houses, plantations are a direct testimony to the richness and importance of the sugar in the south and especially in Louisiana before the Civil War. Several plantation houses in the area plantations are important Nottoway, Oak Alley Plantation and Laura Plantation.
Nottoway Plantation, often called "American Castle" is a 64-piece, three-story Greek Revival house is recognized as the largest plantation his home in the South. Nottoway was built in 1859 by John Hampden Randolph, his wife Emily Jane Liddell Randolph, and their 11 children along the Mississippi River. At 53,000 square meters, the plantation contains many extravagances, such as ornamental iron railings, brass lamps complicated crystal trim, a straight velvet-lined mahogany, bowling alley, gas lighting and hot and cold water (both were unknown at the time). Take a tour of the plantation, while learn the history of the Randolph family, and even how the house gunboats fired by the North during the Civil War.
The Planting Oak Alley, named after the quarter-mile tunnel of 28 oak trees that connect to the entrance of the plantation and the Mississippi River is in 1360 acres of land. The plantation was built for Jacques Telesphore Roman and his wife Celina Roman piety in the 1830s and has been designed with a large terrace keep the house in the shade and summer sun overwhelming. With its wealth envy, it is believed Celina Romano proudly called his plantation "good stay (pleasant) but travelers on the Mississippi River have been so impressed by the oak alley, which they called "Oak Alley." Stroll through the famous oak and learn the history French Creole family history of Rome and the residents of four different owners after the Roman family sold the house at auction and how plantations was abandoned and almost forgotten in the twentieth century.
Laura, a Creole plantation, was built in 1805 and consists of a house, several outbuildings (including six houses of the slaves of origin) and a second house (also called "mother-in-law cottage.) Originally known as Duparc planting has been renamed after Locoul Laura Gore, who was the owner of a quarter of the planting. The resort continued to operate as a plantation well into the twentieth century, and workers use the slave quarters until 1977. About more about the ancient tales of Br'er Rabbit and West Africa Compadre Fox, which have been registered Laura Plantation, and a tour of the family treasures, clothing and antiques on the screen.
So while you're in town for the big game remember to include a visit to some of our countries largest and oldest plantations. Be transported to another time and place, and experience the wonder of the Old South. You probably only once in a lifetime experience, with memories that will last forever.
