Actor-Caster [LP] $15.98 New Orleans indie pop duo the Generationals’ 2011 sophomore effort, Actor-Caster is a veritable mixtape of ’60s pop and ’80s new wave sounds that manages to be a bit more cohesive than the band’s 2009 debut, Con Law. As with Con Law, listening to Actor-Caster is like checking out a great compilation of old-school pop tracks that run the gamut from the ’80s dance-oriented lo-fi sweetness of the Adam Ant-sounding “Ten-Twenty-Ten” to the synth pop meets Ramones balladry of “Yours Forever” and the ’60s reverb-laden girl group cut “You Say It Too.” The main difference is that the songs seem to be more of a piece this time, with each song giving off a moody, hazy vibe that’s never too sad for singing along. In that sense, the duo of ex-Eames Era members singer/guitarists Grant Widmer and Ted Joyner — with their double-tracked vocals and laid-back delivery — will draw favorable comparisons to such contemporaries as the Shins and Field Music. Similarly, such bouncy guitar pop cuts as “Goose & Gander” and the echoey midtempo anthem “Tell Me Now” bring to mind a mix of such ’80s cult favorites as Orange Juice and Aztec Camera. As befitting Bob’s reputation as a seer, there’s a fair selection of protest tunes — “Who Killed Davey Moore,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” but strangely no “Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” — but they’re outweighed by romantic tunes and epics like “Boots of Spanish Leather,” “Seven Curses,” and “Like a Rolling Stone” that fall somewhere in between. Those are the songs that trip off an actor’s tongue like poetry, so of course Cabot gravitates toward those, relishing the turns of phrase but not quite with any sense of the meaning of the words. Naturally, this disconnect, combined with the florid symphonic support, is what launched Sebastian Cabot, Actor/Bob Dylan, Poet into the cult record stratosphere, rivaling if not quite surpassing William Shatner’s glorious odd The Transformed Man, the 1968 LP where Captain Kirk performed “Mr. Tambourine Man” as if he was in the throes of a horrifying acid trip. Cabot isn’t frenzied, he’s warm, even cuddly, a trait that strikes an odd note on “Who Killed Davey Moore,” and that strangeness is the very reason that Sebastian Cabot, Actor/Bob Dylan, Poet is worth hearing decades later, but this is also a superb cultural artifact, capturing how the middle-brow mainstream viewed Dylan in 1967. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine |

First, Loretta agrees to marry a man she does not love, Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello), simply because he knows how to propose properly. Before the wedding can take place, Cammareri must visit his dying mother in Sicily. In his absence, Loretta is supposed to try to patch up the differences between Johnny and his brother, bakery operator Ronny Cammareri (Nicolas Cage). Having never forgiven Johnny for indirectly causing the accident that crippled him, Ronny flies into a rage whenever his brother’s name is mentioned. He does, however, fall for Loretta like a ton of bricks. After a torrid affair, Loretta tries to avoid Ronny out of respect to Johnny, but he’s just too fascinating to resist. Meanwhile, Loretta’s father (Vincent Gardenia) is fooling around with his mistress Mona (Anita Gillette), while Loretta’s mother (Olympia Dukakis) is wooed by a college professor (John Mahoney). These brief flings are forgiven and forgotten, but there’s still the delicate situation of Loretta being in love with her future brother-in-law. A now-classic romantic comedy, Moonstruck won Oscars for Cher, Olympia Dukakis, and screenwriter John Patrick Shanley. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi My Cousin Vinny When sweet Northern college kid Bill (Ralph Macchio) and his buddy Stan (Mitchell Whitfield) are picked up and thrown into the slammer in a hick Southern town, at first it looks like no big deal. Then they are informed that they are accused of murder. Penniless and without a single friend in the area, Bill decides to call his goofy cousin Vinny (Joe Pesci), who has somehow recently become a lawyer. Full of family feeling and bravado, Vinny, who has never tried a criminal case in his short life as a lawyer, rides south to defend his trusting relative. He’s an expert motormouth and street-level logician from the wilder reaches of metropolitan New York, complete with a thick accent and the attitude to go with it. Otherwise, he’s much less well qualified than your average public defender. When he arrives on the scene with his equally brassy girlfriend Lisa (Marisa Tomei), Bill is fairly sure he’s going to be sentenced to death. His buddy Stan is even less confident of his legal representative, if that’s possible, and the first thing Vinny has to do is to regain the consent of his clients to represent them. The local judge doesn’t seem any too sympathetic to Vinny’s verbal shenanigans either, and even the most optimistic supporter of the boys would begin to have doubts at this point — and Vinny’s no exception. With the insistent moral encouragement of his girlfriend, Vinny somehow accomplishes the impossible and wins grudging (if very irritated) respect from all concerned, for once studying as if his life depended on it. ~ Clark |

Murder – B&W $3.99 Alfred Hitchcock’s second all-talkie thriller, Murder stars Herbert Marshall as pompous actor-manager Sir John Menier, a send-up of George DuMaurier. Summoned for jury duty, Sir John is one of 12 people who must decide the fate of Diana Baring (Norah Baring), a young actress on trial for murder. Though the girl is found guilty, Sir John believes that she’s innocent and sets about to prove it on his own, exercising his actor’s prerogative of adopting clever disguises in the course of his investigation. Along the way, he is obliged to entertain a pair of lower-class clods, Ted and Dulcie Markham (Edward Chapman and Phyllis Konstam), who help him stage an elaborate re-enactment of the crime. Foolish Wives – B&W $5.99 Actor/ writer/ director Erich Von Stroheim stars as a fraudulent count, living high on the hog in Monte Carlo. He supports himself by extorting huge sums of money from silly married ladies who are dumb enough to fall for his romantic charms. Von Stroheim’s partners in crime, phony princesses Mae Busch and Maud George, live in a state of perpetual depravity with the count in a huge mansion. Their latest victim, played by an actress who insisted upon being billed as Miss DuPont, is the wife of an American financier. Von Stroheim’s attempted seduction of this particular foolish wife is thwarted at every turn, and the count ultimately gets his comeuppance. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Sex Is Comedy – Widescreen Subtitle Dolby $3.99 Catherine Breillat’s Sex is Comedy concerns a female film director, Jeanne (Anne Parillaud), who is attempting to film a sex scene in her new movie. Complicating the already emotionally difficult shoot is the fact that Jeanne and her lead actor (Gr?goire Colin) are sexually involved. The scene being shot echoes with a scene in Breillat’s previous film, Fat Girl, adding to the supposed “reality” of the situations presented in the film. Roxane Mesquida rounds out the cast as the actress playing the 15-year-old in the scene being filmed. First, she romances Georgeson’s dimwitted but deadly henchman Kevin Kline (who won an Academy Award for his performance). Then, to clear the path for her getaway with Kline, Jamie woos Georgeson’s starched-shirt attorney, John Cleese — and it’s Cleese whom she genuinely falls in love with. Michael Palin, Cleese’s former Monty Python cohort, plays a stuttering mob flunkey who continually messes up his one big assignment: killing a little old lady (it isn’t that he has any qualms about knocking off the old dear; it’s just that her pet dogs keep getting in the way). A Fish Called Wanda was scripted by star John Cleese. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi City Slickers City Slickers blends sight gags, one-liners, and sincerity, with both humor and drama arising from the characters and their situations. Mitch (Billy Crystal) is a radio station sales executive who finds himself in the throes of a mid-life crisis; accompanied by two friends, Phil (Daniel Stern) and Ed (Bruno Kirby) in the grip of similar problems, he heads to New Mexico for his birthday to participate in a two-week “vacation” cattle drive to Colorado. The three friends and the rest of their group, including an attractive, newly single young woman and two African-American dentists, are all urbanites lost when it comes to herding cattle and surviving on the prairie; it’s up to authentic, almost mythic cowboy Curly (Jack Palance, who won an Oscar for the role), to whip them into shape. As various adventures occur along the way, including run-ins with outlaw cattlehands, treacherous natural mishaps, and Mitch’s delivery of a newborn calf, the three “city slickers” open up to each other, learn to appreciate Curly’s Old West values, and begin to resolve their midlife dilemmas. Actors and Sin – B&W $12.99 At least half of the two-part Actors and Sin is well worth having. Part One, “Actor’s Blood”, is based on a Ben Hecht tale of theatrical intrigue. Edward G. Robinson plays a Barrymoresque Shakespearean actor whose obsessive control of the life and career of his actress-daughter Marsha Hunt results in disaster. Part Two, “Woman of Sin”, is another Ben Hecht yarn, this one satirical in nature. Eddie Albert stars as a Hollywood agent who’d sell his Grandmother to represent the author of a sensationally sexy screenplay titled, yes, Woman of Sin. Much to Albert’s surprise (but not ours), the author turns out to be a precocious 9-year-old girl, played by Hecht’s own daughter Jenny. Of the two playlets, “Actor’s Blood”, though ripely melodramatic, scores best in the acting department. “Woman of Sin” is too arch and smug to be consistently funny, while Jenny Hecht is perhaps the greatest argument against nepotism in film history.
