The Actress – Fullscreen B&W

The Actress is based on Years Ago, one of several autobiographies by actress/playwright Ruth Gordon. Jean Simmons stars as blossoming teenager Ruth Gordon Jones, who is determined to become a famous stage star despite the objections of her stubborn ex-sea captain father Clinton Jones (Spencer Tracy). Papa wants Ruth to become a physical-education instructor, but she wants none of this. With the covert help of her understanding mother (Teresa Wright), Ruth seeks out stage work–any stage work. Ultimately, it is Papa who dips into the Jones family’s limited coffers to bankroll his daughter’s first big break. The Actress represented the movie debut of Anthony Perkins, here cast as Ruth Gordon Jones’ gawky boyfriend. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Actor-Caster [LP]

Actor-Caster [LP]

$15.98

New Orleans indie pop duo the Generationals’ 2011 sophomore effort, Actor-Caster is a veritable mixtape of ’60s pop and ’80s new wave sounds that manages to be a bit more cohesive than the band’s 2009 debut, Con Law. As with Con Law, listening to Actor-Caster is like checking out a great compilation of old-school pop tracks that run the gamut from the ’80s dance-oriented lo-fi sweetness of the Adam Ant-sounding “Ten-Twenty-Ten” to the synth pop meets Ramones balladry of “Yours Forever” and the ’60s reverb-laden girl group cut “You Say It Too.” The main difference is that the songs seem to be more of a piece this time, with each song giving off a moody, hazy vibe that’s never too sad for singing along. In that sense, the duo of ex-Eames Era members singer/guitarists Grant Widmer and Ted Joyner — with their double-tracked vocals and laid-back delivery — will draw favorable comparisons to such contemporaries as the Shins and Field Music. Similarly, such bouncy guitar pop cuts as “Goose & Gander” and the echoey midtempo anthem “Tell Me Now” bring to mind a mix of such ’80s cult favorites as Orange Juice and Aztec Camera. Like a forgotten mixtape found while cleaning out your car, Actor-Caster is a pleasantly bittersweet surprise. ~ Matt Collar

Psycho Beach Party director Robert Lee King returns with this twisted black comedy about a has-been television actress who finds her career resurrected following a series of family tragedies. Alyssa Rampart-Pillage used to be the star of the hit TV series “HMO Nurse,” but these days she’s better known as the “Queen of Air Conditioning” in commercials for her husband Bernie’s chain of appliance stores. Though her downhill slide continues after her daughter perishes in a fatal golfing mishap and her grieving husband becomes a spiritual zealot, Alyssa is surprised to find her star once again on the rise as corpses begin turning up everywhere, and the media obsession with her twisted case skyrockets. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

In this renowned and classic Japanese film directed by Kon Ichikawa, the great Kabuki onnagata Kasuo Hasegawa celebrates his 300th film appearance in a role designed especially for him. One of the classic theater styles of Japan, Kabuki does not use women in female roles. Highly trained male actors, called “onnagata,” perform in them, and are often more convincing as women than many women might be. In the story, set in 1836, Yukinojo (Kasuo Hasegawa) is an onnagata, travelling to Edo in feminine disguise. On his journey, he recognizes three ruthless merchants who ruined his father’s business, driving him to suicide. Pledged to revenge his father’s death, he follows them, and with the help of a mysterious bandit martial artist named Yamitaro (also Hasegawa), fulfills his pledge, even though this means the destruction of one of the merchant’s innocent daughters, who has fallen in love with him. Actor Hasegawa performed these same roles in a 1935 film version of this same story, directed by Teinosuke Kinugasa, who consulted on this film. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Sebastian Cabot, Actor/Bob Dylan, Poet

Sebastian Cabot, Actor/Bob Dylan, Poet

$15.99

Cult records rarely come any better than Sebastian Cabot’s 1967 classic, Sebastian Cabot, Actor/Bob Dylan, Poet, an album where the actor — best known for playing Mr. French on the television series Family Affair — speaks the lyrics to us, mama, as he goes through a selection of 11 early classics from the Bard. As befitting Bob’s reputation as a seer, there’s a fair selection of protest tunes — “Who Killed Davey Moore,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” but strangely no “Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” — but they’re outweighed by romantic tunes and epics like “Boots of Spanish Leather,” “Seven Curses,” and “Like a Rolling Stone” that fall somewhere in between. Those are the songs that trip off an actor’s tongue like poetry, so of course Cabot gravitates toward those, relishing the turns of phrase but not quite with any sense of the meaning of the words. Naturally, this disconnect, combined with the florid symphonic support, is what launched Sebastian Cabot, Actor/Bob Dylan, Poet into the cult record stratosphere, rivaling if not quite surpassing William Shatner’s glorious odd The Transformed Man, the 1968 LP where Captain Kirk performed “Mr. Tambourine Man” as if he was in the throes of a horrifying acid trip. Cabot isn’t frenzied, he’s warm, even cuddly, a trait that strikes an odd note on “Who Killed Davey Moore,” and that strangeness is the very reason that Sebastian Cabot, Actor/Bob Dylan, Poet is worth hearing decades later, but this is also a superb cultural artifact, capturing how the middle-brow mainstream viewed Dylan in 1967. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Includes:Coming Home (1978), MPAA Rating: R Norma Rae (1979), MPAA Rating: PG Coming Home Hal Ashby’s 1978 melodrama examines the impact of the Vietnam War on the “war at home” among the men who fought it and the women in their lives. Left alone in Los Angeles when her gung-ho Marine husband Bob (Bruce Dern) heads to Vietnam in 1968, proper wife Sally Hyde (Jane Fonda) decides to volunteer at the V.A. hospital where her new friend Vi (Penelope Milford) works. There she meets Luke Martin (Jon Voight), a former high-school classmate and Marine who has returned from ‘Nam a bitter paraplegic. As their relationship grows, Sally sees the effect of the war on the soldiers after they come back, inspiring her to rethink her priorities; Luke’s spirits begin to lift, and a hospital tragedy helps focus his anger toward meaningful protest. After a Hong Kong visit with her increasingly withdrawn husband, Sally finds a love and companionship with Luke that she had never known with her husband. Once Bob comes home with his own injury, however, the three must find a way to deal with a changing world and with a system that betrayed the men fighting for it. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi Norma Rae Norma Rae finds Sally Field cast in the title role, a minimum-wage worker in a cotton mill. The factory has taken too much of a toll on the health of Norma Rae’s family for her to ignore her Dickensian working conditions. After hearing a speech by New York union organizer Reuben (Ron Leibman), Norma Rae decides to join the effort to unionize her shop. This causes dissension at home when Norma Rae’s husband, Sonny (Beau Bridges), assumes that her activism is a result of a romance between herself and Reuben. Despite the pressure brought to bear by management, Norma Rae successfully orchestrates a shutdown of the mill, resulting in victory for the union and capitulation to its demands. Based on a true story, Norma Rae is the film for which Sally Field won her first Oscar; an additional Oscar went to David Shire and Norman Gimbel for the film’s theme song, “It Goes Like It Goes.” ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Includes:Moonstruck (1987), MPAA Rating: PG My Cousin Vinny (1992), MPAA Rating: R Moonstruck When there’s a full moon over Brooklyn, anything can happen, and everything happens in the neighborhood where widowed bookkeeper Loretta Castorini (Cher) lives. First, Loretta agrees to marry a man she does not love, Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello), simply because he knows how to propose properly. Before the wedding can take place, Cammareri must visit his dying mother in Sicily. In his absence, Loretta is supposed to try to patch up the differences between Johnny and his brother, bakery operator Ronny Cammareri (Nicolas Cage). Having never forgiven Johnny for indirectly causing the accident that crippled him, Ronny flies into a rage whenever his brother’s name is mentioned. He does, however, fall for Loretta like a ton of bricks. After a torrid affair, Loretta tries to avoid Ronny out of respect to Johnny, but he’s just too fascinating to resist. Meanwhile, Loretta’s father (Vincent Gardenia) is fooling around with his mistress Mona (Anita Gillette), while Loretta’s mother (Olympia Dukakis) is wooed by a college professor (John Mahoney). These brief flings are forgiven and forgotten, but there’s still the delicate situation of Loretta being in love with her future brother-in-law. A now-classic romantic comedy, Moonstruck won Oscars for Cher, Olympia Dukakis, and screenwriter John Patrick Shanley. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi My Cousin Vinny When sweet Northern college kid Bill (Ralph Macchio) and his buddy Stan (Mitchell Whitfield) are picked up and thrown into the slammer in a hick Southern town, at first it looks like no big deal. Then they are informed that they are accused of murder. Penniless and without a single friend in the area, Bill decides to call his goofy cousin Vinny (Joe Pesci), who has somehow recently become a lawyer. Full of family feeling and bravado, Vinny, who has never tried a criminal case in his short life as a lawyer, rides south to defend his trusting relative. He’s an expert motormouth and street-level logician from the wilder reaches of metropolitan New York, complete with a thick accent and the attitude to go with it. Otherwise, he’s much less well qualified than your average public defender. When he arrives on the scene with his equally brassy girlfriend Lisa (Marisa Tomei), Bill is fairly sure he’s going to be sentenced to death. His buddy Stan is even less confident of his legal representative, if that’s possible, and the first thing Vinny has to do is to regain the consent of his clients to represent them. The local judge doesn’t seem any too sympathetic to Vinny’s verbal shenanigans either, and even the most optimistic supporter of the boys would begin to have doubts at this point — and Vinny’s no exception. With the insistent moral encouragement of his girlfriend, Vinny somehow accomplishes the impossible and wins grudging (if very irritated) respect from all concerned, for once studying as if his life depended on it. ~ Clark

Murder – B&W

$3.99

Alfred Hitchcock’s second all-talkie thriller, Murder stars Herbert Marshall as pompous actor-manager Sir John Menier, a send-up of George DuMaurier. Summoned for jury duty, Sir John is one of 12 people who must decide the fate of Diana Baring (Norah Baring), a young actress on trial for murder. Though the girl is found guilty, Sir John believes that she’s innocent and sets about to prove it on his own, exercising his actor’s prerogative of adopting clever disguises in the course of his investigation. Along the way, he is obliged to entertain a pair of lower-class clods, Ted and Dulcie Markham (Edward Chapman and Phyllis Konstam), who help him stage an elaborate re-enactment of the crime. Based on Enter Sir John, a novel and play by Clemence Dane and Helen Simpson, Murder was simultaneously filmed in a German version, with Alfred Abel replacing Herbert Marshall. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Catherine Breillat’s Sex is Comedy concerns a female film director, Jeanne (Anne Parillaud), who is attempting to film a sex scene in her new movie. Complicating the already emotionally difficult shoot is the fact that Jeanne and her lead actor (Gr?goire Colin) are sexually involved. The scene being shot echoes with a scene in Breillat’s previous film, Fat Girl, adding to the supposed “reality” of the situations presented in the film. Roxane Mesquida rounds out the cast as the actress playing the 15-year-old in the scene being filmed. Sex Is Comedy was screened during the Director’s Fortnight at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

Includes:A Fish Called Wanda (1988), MPAA Rating: R City Slickers (1991), MPAA Rating: PG-13 A Fish Called Wanda In A Fish Called Wanda, Jamie Lee Curtis plays an ambitious con artist who uses every ounce of her sexual wiles to obtain a fortune in jewels stolen by her gangster lover Tom Georgeson. First, she romances Georgeson’s dimwitted but deadly henchman Kevin Kline (who won an Academy Award for his performance). Then, to clear the path for her getaway with Kline, Jamie woos Georgeson’s starched-shirt attorney, John Cleese — and it’s Cleese whom she genuinely falls in love with. Michael Palin, Cleese’s former Monty Python cohort, plays a stuttering mob flunkey who continually messes up his one big assignment: killing a little old lady (it isn’t that he has any qualms about knocking off the old dear; it’s just that her pet dogs keep getting in the way). A Fish Called Wanda was scripted by star John Cleese. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi City Slickers City Slickers blends sight gags, one-liners, and sincerity, with both humor and drama arising from the characters and their situations. Mitch (Billy Crystal) is a radio station sales executive who finds himself in the throes of a mid-life crisis; accompanied by two friends, Phil (Daniel Stern) and Ed (Bruno Kirby) in the grip of similar problems, he heads to New Mexico for his birthday to participate in a two-week “vacation” cattle drive to Colorado. The three friends and the rest of their group, including an attractive, newly single young woman and two African-American dentists, are all urbanites lost when it comes to herding cattle and surviving on the prairie; it’s up to authentic, almost mythic cowboy Curly (Jack Palance, who won an Oscar for the role), to whip them into shape. As various adventures occur along the way, including run-ins with outlaw cattlehands, treacherous natural mishaps, and Mitch’s delivery of a newborn calf, the three “city slickers” open up to each other, learn to appreciate Curly’s Old West values, and begin to resolve their midlife dilemmas. When Curly dies, it’s left to Mitch, Phil, and Ed to bring in the herd. ~ Don Kaye, Rovi

Actors and Sin - B&W

Actors and Sin – B&W

$12.99

At least half of the two-part Actors and Sin is well worth having. Part One, “Actor’s Blood”, is based on a Ben Hecht tale of theatrical intrigue. Edward G. Robinson plays a Barrymoresque Shakespearean actor whose obsessive control of the life and career of his actress-daughter Marsha Hunt results in disaster. Part Two, “Woman of Sin”, is another Ben Hecht yarn, this one satirical in nature. Eddie Albert stars as a Hollywood agent who’d sell his Grandmother to represent the author of a sensationally sexy screenplay titled, yes, Woman of Sin. Much to Albert’s surprise (but not ours), the author turns out to be a precocious 9-year-old girl, played by Hecht’s own daughter Jenny. Of the two playlets, “Actor’s Blood”, though ripely melodramatic, scores best in the acting department. “Woman of Sin” is too arch and smug to be consistently funny, while Jenny Hecht is perhaps the greatest argument against nepotism in film history. Ostensibly directed by Ben Hecht (who also produced), Actors and Sin was largely helmed by cinematographer Lee Garmes. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
